I love your posts, Caitlin. Without fail I come away with an interesting new outlook, a reminder of what’s important, and massive pride in having such an insightful and talented niece x
Thank you so much for writing this, Caitlin! This is a topic I’ve been thinking about a lot over the past couple of years - and it’s generous honesty like yours in this piece (plus gorgeously crafted writing and curated insights from the likes of Ann Patchett) that feels - excuse the pun - most enriching and makes the difference.
‘There’s only one antidote to consumerism that I’ve found, and it’s not a miracle cure - it’s a pill you must swallow over and over again, and sometimes it’ll be one of those big, dusty pills that lodges in your throat. The only antidote is this: accepting that you have enough, that you are enough, and that you will always be enough.’ - this is lovely. Also liked the idea of letting those urgent spendy feelings pass (I’ve heard it described as ‘urge surfing’ in personal development literature, I think it’s a similar concept).
Thanks so much Francesca! What lovely words to wake up to. I might start using ‘urgent spendy feelings’ in my daily lexicon - that totally sums it up whilst also making it sound suitably silly!
I like the idea of ‘urge surfing’ too so thank you! I appreciate the idea that it’s just a wave we’ve got to ride out and there’s an end point, the shore, in sight.
